Surgical Treatment of Spinal Cord Damage
The spinal cord is an important part of the human nervous system which helps in maintaining the communication between the brain and the other parts of the body. Disruption or disease related to the spinal cord may cause a life-threatening condition which should be avoided thoroughly. One must consult the specialists and go through surgical procedures if needed. There are various surgical procedures and implants needed to treat deformities of the spinal cord and make it strong.
Types of implants
Implants are mainly made up of the materials that are compatible to the human body which can provide the needed supports and stability to the spinal cord. There are generally two types of implants, Fusion implants (with bone grafting) and Non – fusion implants (without bone grafting). Bone grafting is the surgical procedure by which a damaged bone tissue is removed in order to repair the bone damages. The materials that are used to make implants are mainly titanium, titanium alloy, stainless steel and sometimes plastic. The implants should be very lightweight but strong and must be seen using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).
Some disease related to spine need a special care and should undergo a surgery. Some of the diseases are bone fracture, disc disease, scoliosis, kyphosis and many others. Surgeries related to the spine are very crucial and complicated that is why it is very important to consult best spine specialist doctors in India. They provide the best treatments and are always ready to help.
The two types of implants
- Fusion Implants: Fusion implantation is mainly done with bone grafting. Some materials that are used in this process are rods, screws, plates, interbody cages etc. The rods and other materials are sized according to the requirement of the patient. Sometimes the screws are coated with some stimulant to fasten fusion. This process is mainly done in adults.
- Non – fusion Implants: Non – fusion implants are mainly done in children because they have not reached skeletal maturity yet. The examples of non – fusion implants are artificial discs, growth-sparing devices such as Vertical Expandable Prosthetic Titanium Rib (VEPTR) that can treat scoliosis.
Future of Spine Surgery
The best spine surgeons in India always try to bring modern techniques, procedures, and advancements in medical science. They try to discover such procedures that can harmless to other tissues, are less painful and take less time to heal.
A 3D printing technology is one way ahead to the future in which surgeons will first design the part of the patients that will be implanted in the computer and then the 3D structure will be implanted in the patient’s body. This process is growing very rapidly despite having a very high costing. Hopefully, it will be very common in coming few years.
Conclusion
Diseases related to bone and spinal cord is increasing day by day but with the advancement of medical science, things have become easier. Regular health checkups can cure most of the diseases. So it is better to keep in touch with the specialist.
